NFA has generated phenomenal enthusiasm amongst the population living within the vicinity of forest reserves. In Nebbi district for example, five groups from the local population have formed pit-sawing associations around Lendu and Okave reru plantations.

While on a recent tour, the Executive Director, NFA and the Director Plantations in the Lendu management area met some leaders of the groups and shared experiences. These included Mr. Phillip Keober, the leader for Zeu ollo pit sawyers association which is operating in Lendu plantation which employs over sixty men and women.

Okavu boys, another group from the community surrounding the Okavu reru plantation has benefited immensely from the forest reserve. Under the leadership of Mr. Martin Yoku the group is reaping handsomely. According to Mr. Martin Yoku, each of the members of the association earns a minimum of three thousand shillings per day.

In a neighborhood where jobs that earn such amounts are difficult to come-by, the Okavu reru plantation is regarded as a Godsend to be cherished and utilized. “I have just bought a new motorcycle which has eased my movement and coordination of my business. Thanks to the Okavu reru plantation. We are indeed indebted to NFA”, said the beaming Yoku.

NFA Executive Director, Damian Akankwasa reaffirmed the forest body’s commitment towards improvement in the livelihoods of the people through income generation and challenged other communities to take-up similar initiatives as opposed to engaging in illegal activities.
