NFA & NWSC to Grow One Million Trees

The National Forestry Authority in partnership with the National water and Sewerage Corporation has partnered to plant one million trees in all its areas of operation in Uganda.

The partnership targets to increase forest cover in especially on areas outside protected areas to allow easy access to forest products for the general public.

While launching the partnership at the NWSC headquarters Paul Buyerah the Ag. ED-NFA appreciated efforts by NWSC towards environmental conservation and committed to that NFA will give technical guidance and seedlings “It’s high time the Ugandans, Government Organizations, private sector and communities to participate in the conservation of their environment” He said

He further informed that NFA is currently investing in planting fast growing trees like Bamboo to feed the increasing demand for Forestry products given the increasing population.

The NWSC MD Dr.Eng Silver urged the people of Uganda to be part of environmental protection initiatives.
“In recent months, NWSC has experienced extreme water scarcity Mityana, Bushenyi, Mbarara among many other areas”.

Through this partnership NFA and NWSC will plant live fences around all its offices, plant trees to protect the catchment, plants trees with communities and Central Forest Reserves that host NWSC facilities.

According to Dr. Silver, NWSC is piloting technology to produce brickets from treated sludge. (Biofuel). This will provide alternative fuel and reduce on use of firewood for cooking/cutting down trees. This will reduce pressure on the natural forests to allow them serve their ecological functions.
