This hidden germ is situated at the landscape of Rubanda found in the district of Kibale and Rukungiri in the south west of Uganda, covering hectares approximately 3,699 with 9,140 acres and it spans an area between 1200 and 2800 meters above the sea level. This forest harbors a variety of natural heritages namely the deep valleys beautiful hills within the lush forested areas.
Mafuga Central Forest Reserve is managed by the National Forestry Authority (NFA) till date, to develop eco-tourism. This has been possible through a number of strategies, such as carrying out bio diversity inventories, afforestation and demarcating the boundaries.
Flora and Fauna of Mafuga Forest Reserve
Mafuga Central Forest reserve is gifted with a variety of plants and animal species, comprising of tree species and lush vegetation with mahoganies and other species reaching heights of 60 meters tall, the forest owns amphibians and reptiles like frogs, toads, and newts, snakes, lizards, turtles among others.
The forest owns most of the bird species including the rare and regional species and these include the white olive back, grey parrot, fly catcher grey capped warbler, black bee eater, dusky long- tailed cuckoo, blue throated roller, blue headed sun bird white winged tern malachite, pied kingfisher, African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek papyrus canary, African mourning dove among others.
Mafuga central forest owns two prominent mountains the highest which is Bihangire reaching an elevation of 2,324 meters above the sea level, the other named Mountain in the reserve is Mafuga.
Mafuga is a home to different butterfly species namely the great blue turaco butterfly, African queen butterflies, citrus swallow tail, giant swallow tail, green-banded swallow tail Uganda gilder that look so nicely dotted with attractive colors.

Bird Watching
This forest gives a worthy bird watching experience over 60 bird’s species including the rare and regionally significant birds are found with in the forest. Birding is done with company of well trained and experienced armed rangers and guides expect seeing several unique species of aquatic bird Namely fly catcher grey capped warbler, white winged tern malachite, pied kingfisher, African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek papyrus canary, African mourning dove and many others
During birding visitors owe high chances of seeing the lush vegetation with mahoganies and other species reaching heights of 60 meters tall, as well as seeing the unique butterfly species moths among others. Guided Nature Walk
This walk is done by well and trained experienced tour guides and it take approximately 4 to 6 hours visitors at the Mafuga Forest Reserve they do move on foot, exploring the forest and there are high chances of spotting the different species of amphibians and reptiles in their natural habitat, like frogs, toads, and newts, snakes, lizards, turtles among others.
During the walk there are high chances of visiting the two prominent mountains the highest which is Bihangire reaching an elevation of 2,324 meters above the sea level, the other named Mountain in the reserve is Mafuga visitors are advised to carry enough eatables and drinking water for better preparation in advance.
Best Time to Visit Mafuga Central Forest Reserve
The best time to visit Mafuga central Forest Reserve it’s during the dry seasons, which typically run from December to February and from June to August. During these periods the weather is more favorable for outdoor activities, with less rainfall making the forest trails are easier to navigate through and the wildlife is more visible.
Birdwatching is particularly rewarding in these months as many bird species are more active and easier to spot. The cooler dry climate enhances the experience of canopy walks, nature hikes, and eco-tours, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the lush beauty of the rain forest.
